National Dairy Shrine Announces 2019 Scholarship Recipients - June 2019

Denmark, WI. The National Dairy Shrine is pleased to announce the recipients of the NDS scholarships for 2019. National Dairy Shrine will provide 40 scholarships worth $47,000 to students at their annual scholarship & awards banquet on Thursday, October 3rd in Madison, Wisconsin. This announcement highlights the scholarship winners so their friends and family can plan ahead to attend the NDS Awards Banquet. The brother and sister team of Ralph W. Shank Jr. and Mary Shank Creek of Palmyra Farm, Hagerstown, Maryland, have been selected as the 2019 recipient of National Dairy Shrine’s Distinguished Dairy Cattle Breeder award. They are the first brother and sister breeder honorees in the 70-year history of Dairy Shrine. This award is presented annually to an active, progressive dairy producer who excels in the management of a dairy breeding herd based on sound business and genetic principles.

Clay to Receive National Dairy Shrine's Pioneer Award - June 2019

Dr. John S. Clay, Director of Dairy Records Management Systems (DRMS) at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina, and a leader in the Dairy Herd Improvement (DHI) records segment of the dairy industry, is one of this year's Pioneer honorees. A driving force in the dairy technology area, Clay has helped to bring dairy farming into the "computer age" by developing dairy herd management software and record analysis systems that have helped dairy producers to make more informed, cost-effective decisions on their farms.

Among the Pioneer honorees is Larry F. Moore (1907-1985), the noted Red & White Holstein breeder, entrepreneur, and visionary who lived at Suamico, Wisconsin. "A man decades ahead of his time," says Amanda Sell of the Red & White Dairy Cattle Association, Moore's lifetime interest in animal genetics and the interaction of recessive genes made him truly a "pioneer" in the Red & White Holstein movement.

The Guest of Honor is given to an active contemporary dairy leader for outstanding accomplishments and contributions to the dairy industry. It has been awarded every year since 1949 when Dean H. Kildee was named the first Guest of Honor.

Meanwhile, Nate Janssen, Wheaton, Illinois was chosen as President-Elect. Elected to the Executive Committee along with Schirm and Janssen were: Dr. Dennis Funk, Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, Janet Keller, Oregon, Wisconsin, Joel Hastings, Madera, California and immediate Past President Dan Bernick of Long Grove, Iowa.

These $1000 scholarships are given in honor of Maurice Core, the long-time Executive Secretary of the American Jersey Cattle Association, and former Executive Director of the National Dairy Shrine. DENMARK, WI - Ashley Hagenow of Poynette, Wisconsin and Sarah Lehner of Delaware, Ohio, have been selected as recipients of the 2018 Marshall E. McCullough Scholarships given in memory of Marshall McCullough, the well-respected nutrition researcher and educator from Georgia. This scholarship is presented to two high school seniors planning to attend a four-year college or university to major in an agricultural communications field. The Student Recognition program recognizes graduating seniors planning a career related to the dairy industry who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, academic ability, and a sincere interest in dairy cattle. Each university is allowed to nominate up to two candidates for this recognition in any given year. The highest winner receives a $2000 award, the second a $1500 award and the other winners receive $1000 awards.
