Four National Dairy Shrine Sophomore Merit Scholarships were awarded to Johanna Knorr Pelican Rapids, MN, Trevor Otte, Randolph, MN, Amber Gabel, Newport, PA and Elizabeth Endres, Waunakee, WI. Knorr received a $1,500 award, while the other three winners received $1,000 awards. Morgan Krause of Buffalo, Minnesota and Stephanie McBath of Schuylerville, New York have been selected as winners of the 2015 Marshall E. McCullough Scholarships given in memory of Marshall McCullough, the well-respected nutrition researcher and educator from Georgia. This scholarship is presented to two high school seniors planning to attend a four-year college or university to major in an agricultural communications field. The application process includes both a written application and, once finalists are chosen, a video submission responding to specific dairy industry questions.

Isaac Haagen and Amy Kraus have been selected as this year’s recipients of the NDS Kildee Graduate Scholarships and Bethany Dado with the Kildee Undergraduate Scholarship. All were selected based upon on academic success, dairy activities, leadership ability, and experience in the dairy industry, as well as future goals. The Kildee scholarship was started in honor of H.H. Kildee, dean emeritus at Iowa State University. The scholarships, two for students pursuing graduate studies and the one awarded to an undergraduate, are given to exceptional students in his name.

These $1000 scholarships are awarded annually to second-year students enrolled in a two-year agricultural school and pursuing a career in the dairy industry. Each of the $1000 awards are given in honor of Maurice Core, the long-time Executive Secretary of the American Jersey Cattle Association and Executive Director of the National Dairy Shrine. The scholarship is awarded to a freshman student working towards a degree in dairy or related fields with an emphasis on leadership and volunteerism.

Each of these deserving recipients receives a travel grant of $2,000 to use for an approved education experience. Iris Barham of Mt. Berry, Ga., will be honored in the small herd category, while Johan Heijkoop of Webster, Fla., has earned recognition in the large herd category. Several organizations including National Dairy Shrine recognize outstanding breeders; however, this recognition is designed to recognize dairy managers that provide outstanding leadership and service to the commercial dairy industry.
